I decided to do a page dedicated to the importance of socializing a puppy. To be able to have a well behaved and happy puppy/dog you have to socialize them. The more interaction and people that they meet the more social they will become and this will result in a better mannered dog. If you want a dog that likes to ride in the car you have to take him for rides in the car. If you want a dog that is not scared of new people you have to take him around new people. If you want a dog that likes to be around other dogs you have to take him around other dogs. My vet is always amazed at how social my puppies are by the age of 6 weeks. Time and again my families will write and talk about how easy a transition the puppy had coming into their home which is due to socialization.
As you know from my page dedicated to my special helpers my puppies are started on socialization skills at a very young age. I also encourage adopting families to come and visit their puppy as much as they can. I am very lucky in my set up that my husband works from home and is with our dogs all day. I work about 5 minutes from my home so I can run home at a moment's notice. I also take my puppies to work with me periodically and we have what I like to call "puppy therapy" for my co-workers. It is very beneficial to my puppies and you would be suprised at how much it helps the humans! So, by the time one of my puppies leaves my kennel they are about as socialized as they come.
Below are some pictures of the last puppy therapy session at my office. Fun was had by all!
